The Spiritan Ministry of Education: Hard at Work in the United States

Among its many and varied ministries, a particular strength of the American Spiritan apostolate lies in the field of education. Spiritans in the United States work in eight universities, two graduate programs of theological education, five secondary schools and special educational ministry through Catholic Relief Services. At least 15 Spiritan priests are pursuing full-time graduate studies at American universities.

Spiritans in the United States serve in:

  • Educational administration at both the secondary and higher education level
  • Campus ministry and chaplaincy
  • Counseling
  • Teaching.

Some of the universities represented in this ministry are:

  • University of San Diego
  • University of St. Thomas in Houston
  • University of Houston
  • Texas Southern University in Houston
  • University of Notre Dame
  • Catholic University of America
  • Salve Regina University in Providence
  • Duquesne University.

The ministry of theological education and professional ministry are undertaken at Catholic Theological Union in Chicago and St. Mary’s Seminary in Houston. Noted Spiritan professors and scholars in the fields of moral theology, biblical studies and missiology contribute an invaluable service to these institutions.

Secondary education is the focus of the apostolate for Spiritans at Notre Dame Prep in Scottsdale, Ariz.; Seton-Keough High School and The Cardinal Gibbons School, both in Baltimore; and Holy Ghost Preparatory School, a college preparatory school for boys in Bensalem, Pa.
