Get to Know Duquesne’s Pharmacy for National Pharmacists Month

To recognize the significant contributions to patient care by pharmacists in all types of practice settings, the American Pharmacists Association is celebrating American Pharmacists Month throughout October.

“The theme is ‘Know your medicine. Know your pharmacist,'” said Terri Kroh, director of Duquesne’s pharmacy, the Center for Pharmacy Services. “It’s important because patients can improve their health outcomes by having a good relationship with their pharmacy team.”

By relying on their pharmacists, patients can ensure their drug therapies are as safe and effective as possible. Kroh explained, “If a patient sees several different specialists, and each of them prescribes a different medication for varying health issues, the pharmacist can catch any potential interactions by reviewing the patient’s complete list of prescriptions.”

It’s a good reason to fill prescriptions at the same pharmacy, too. “If a patient comes to us for all their prescription medications, then we have an accurate record of their drug therapies and can help patients manage those therapies,” Kroh said.

The Duquesne community is encouraged to get to know the team at the Center for Pharmacy Services, which will deliver medications to campus free of charge.

“Even if a staff member or student can’t come to us, we’re always available for counseling by phone,” Kroh said. “And we check and double-check our patients’ complete list of drug therapies to help ensure healthy results.”

The Center for Pharmacy Services is open 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday and 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday.

Staffed by licensed pharmacists, the pharmacy is operated by the Mylan School of Pharmacy and serves both the public and the University community. The center helps patients manage their medications and live healthy lifestyles.
