Retirement Reception Scheduled for Nursing Dean Eileen Zungolo

The campus community is invited to attend a retirement reception for School of Nursing Dean Eileen Zungolo on Tuesday, April 17, from 3 to 5 p.m. in the Power Center Ballroom.

Eileen Zungolo

The reception will serve to honor and thank Zungolo, who has served as dean since 2002, for her many contributions as a nurse, educator and leader for the University and the Pittsburgh community.

Zungolo’s tenure as dean has been one of noteworthy accomplishments, including:

  • Earning Center of Excellence designation for the School of Nursing twice (2008–2011 and 2011–2015), an honor presently granted by the National League for Nursing to only 13 nursing schools in the country.
  • Creating an online Doctor of Nursing Practice program and launching a community-based undergraduate curriculum that complements the University’s commitment to community service.
  • Establishing the Jacques Laval Endowed Chair in Justice for Vulnerable Populations and the Rita M. McGinley Symposium, a national scholarly forum for addressing issues of social justice in health care.

In addition, Zungolo is a former past president of the National League for Nursing as well as an early advocate of establishing that organization’s nationally recognized Certified Nurse Educator credential. She earned the credential herself in 2005, the first year it was available, and remains one of the few nursing deans to have the credential.

Members of the Duquesne community are encouraged to donate to the Eileen H. Zungolo Endowed Scholarship, which will fund academic and need-based scholarships to extend the Spiritans’ vision of educational access for all while attracting the most talented students to the School of Nursing.
