Policies and Practices at the National Institutes of Health (NIH) will be discussed by Dr. Jeremy M. Berg, a former NIH executive, at a brown bag lunch lecture sponsored by the Office of Research.

Berg, former director of the National Institute of General Medical Sciences at the NIH and senior vice chancellor for science strategy and planning at the University of Pittsburgh, will present the lecture on Wednesday, May 9, from noon to 1:30 p.m. in Room 613 of the Union.

At the NIH, Berg oversaw a $2 billion budget that funds basic research in the areas of cell biology, biophysics, genetics, developmental biology, pharmacology, physiology, biological chemistry, bioinformatics and computational biology. A member of the NIH Steering Committee and NIH Scientific Management Review Board, he served as co-chair of the NIH Peer Review Advisory Committee to improve the NIH peer review system. His numerous awards include the American Chemical Society Award in Pure Chemistry and the Howard K. Schachman Public Service Award from the American Society for Biochemistry and Molecular Biology.

Berg received his degrees in chemistry from Stanford University and his doctorate in chemistry from Harvard University.
