Black History Month Events Scheduled Throughout February

Numerous events, coordinated by the Office of Multicultural Affairs, will be held on campus throughout the month of February to celebrate Black History Month.

All events are free and open to the public with the exception of the Chuck Cooper Classic basketball game, which requires paid admission.

Saturday, Feb. 9

The Duquesne Dukes will face the Xavier Musketeers at 7 p.m. in the CONSOL Energy Center for the annual Chuck Cooper Classic. The event serves to honor Duquesne alumnus Cooper, who was the first African American drafted into the NBA. Cooper played for the Duquesne Dukes in the late 1940s and was drafted by the Boston Celtics in 1950. Tickets are available at www.ticketmaster.com.

Wednesday, Feb. 13

The Black Student Union will host Black Love Day: Honoring Duquesne’s Distinguished Gentlemen at 6 p.m. in the Africa room. The event will recognize Black Love Day, a national holiday that honors love within the Black community. This is a catered event. RSVP to Ciarra Lewis by Monday, Feb. 4.

Tuesday, Feb. 19

The Black Student Union will host Celebration of Black Greek Life at 7 p.m. in the Africa room. The program aims to educate the campus community about prominent and historical figures from the past and present who are affiliated with the National Pan-Hellenic Council and Black Greek Lettered Organizations. Information will be presented on the various civic engagement initiatives in which the organizations participates. Contact Talia Kirkland for more information.

Tuesday, Feb. 26

Students, University officials and community leaders will celebrate Duquesne establishing the first Collegiate 100 Chapter in Pennsylvania at the Collegiate 100 Pinning Ceremony at 6 p.m. in the Power Center Ballroom. Through Collegiate 100, which is a programming arm of the 100 Black Men of America, Duquesne students have committed to being mentors and positive role models to youth. The event will include a dinner followed by a keynote speaker. Seating is limited. RSVP is required by Monday, Feb. 18, by calling 412.396.1117.

Wednesday, Feb. 28

The Black Student Union will host a Cultural Awareness Discussion at 6 p.m. in the Africa Room as a way to generate conversation about unity and cultural awareness among college students and the campus community. Contact Talia Kirkland for more information.
