Gumberg Library Awarded Muslim Journeys Bookshelf Collection

Gumberg Library has been awarded a Muslim Journeys Bookshelf grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) and the American Library Association (ALA).

The Bridging Cultures Bookshelf’s Muslim Journeys resource grant will enhance the library’s current collection and promote a University dialogue on the history and diverse cultures of Muslims in America and around the world.

According to University Librarian Dr. Laverna Saunders, the grant will also serve as a springboard for new campus community programs.

“We see the Muslim Journeys Bookshelf as a resource for faculty to establish new curriculum and courses,” said Saunders. “We believe these materials will promote new thinking, encourage mutual respect and help those engaged with the collection gain an appreciation for diverse religions, cultures and persons.”

The grant comprises a collection of books, films and a one-year subscription to Oxford Islamic Studies Online. The materials have been organized around five themes: American Stories, Connected Histories, Literary Reflections, Pathways of Faith and Points of View.

Gumberg Library will host speakers who will share how the resources can be employed to further the multicultural experience of students at a special presentation on Thursday, April 18, from 4 to 6 p.m. in the Maureen Sullivan Curriculum Center located on the library’s fifth floor.

Staff, faculty and students are welcome. For additional information or to RSVP, email Laverna Saunders or call 412.396.6136.
