The Urban Education April Symposium, scheduled for Wednesday, April 24, from 4-7 p.m. in the Power Center Ballroom, will celebrate the efforts and accomplishments of students enrolled in the Leading Teacher Program in Urban Education.

As a specialization available to undergraduate students in the School of Education’s Leading Teacher Program (LTP), the Urban Education focus of the LTP integrates a wide range of disciplines to prepare students to become effective educators in urban settings. The event features a panel discussion by students in the program as well as a keynote by Dr. Cynthia Tyson, a leading expert in multicultural education.

Tyson, whose presentation is titled Reading “To Be the Change:” Using Multicultural Literature to Teach for Social Justice, is a professor in the School of Teaching and Learning at The Ohio State University. She has earned international recognition for her scholarship in a wide range of subject areas, including race and racism in qualitative research, developing cultural competence in teacher education, and the implementation and impact of literature in the lives of children and young adults in teaching for social justice. She began her career in education as an elementary school teacher and later served as a multicultural education specialist.

The event’s schedule has time set aside for questions as well as for reviewing student poster presentations. Reservations for this event should be made by Friday, April 19, with Melissa Price, 412.396.1852.
