Newman Lecture to Explore Theology of Faith

The National Institute for Newman Studies, in affiliation with the McAnulty College and Graduate School of Liberal Arts, will host the second annual Newman Memorial Lecture, The Theology of Faith and Newman’s Oxford University Sermons, on Thursday, Sept. 19, at 5 p.m. in the Power Center Ballroom.

Distinguished theologian Dr. Mark McIntosh will explore Blessed John Henry Newman’s Oxford University Sermons to help attendees understand the importance of Newman’s teachings within.

Contrary to the dominant modern practice, McIntosh follows Newman in refusing to analyze the nature of faith in abstraction from theological beliefs. During the lecture, McIntosh will discuss Newman’s arguments against philosopher John Locke, showing that they can lead to a renewal of the theology of faith.

McIntosh is the Van Mildert Canon Professor of Divinity in the Department of Theology and Religion at Durham University and the influential author of many books, including Discernment and Truth: The Spirituality and Theology of Knowledge. He lectures and publishes widely on the interaction of Christian theology, spirituality and mystical thought.
