‘Beethoven on the Bluff’ Series Presents ‘Piano Trios II’

The Mary Pappert School of Music will present Piano Trios II, the second installment of the Beethoven on the Bluff: The Early Years concert series, on Monday, Oct. 14, at 7:30 p.m. in the PNC Recital Hall.

David Allen Wehr

The concert will feature Three Piano Trios, op. 1, a set of three piano trios that were originally performed in 1793, but were “polished” for another two years before Beethoven officially published them as his Opus One. The pieces show a remarkable diversity and depth of emotion, as well as many strokes of genius, according to David Allen Wehr, the Jack W. Geltz Distinguished Piano Chair and artistic director for the concert series.

The Duquesne Piano Trio will present Three Piano Trios, op. 1 as a whole, the way Beethoven originally intended. The Trio includes Wehr; Charles Stegeman, violinist and concertmaster of the Pittsburgh Opera/Ballet Orchestra; and Adam Liu, cellist and assistant principal cellist for the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra.

Through a series of concerts, Beethoven on the Bluff: The Early Years will examine the piano chamber music renowned classical composer Ludwig van Beethoven. This season’s repertoire is focusing on the music Beethoven wrote between 1793-1801, when he was in his 20s.

A $10 donation is suggested for admission to Piano Trios II. For more information, call the School of Music at 412.396.6083 or visit www.duq.edu/beethoven.
