Powerful Stories Shared at United Way Campus-Wide Luncheon

The United Way campus-wide luncheon held Oct. 30 featured a number of speakers, including one who shared how the St. Anthony School Program (a United Way agency) changed his family’s life.

Keith Loiselle, a parent of a St. Anthony graduate and former vice-chairman, talked about his son Kevin, who was left with physical and mental challenges after slipping into a coma eight days after birth from a rare vitamin deficiency. After finishing high school, Kevin became adrift while his friends headed off to college. The St. Anthony Program was there to provide a roadmap that enabled Kevin to continue life with his peers, to participate in typical college activities and to become an active and contributing member of society.

Loiselle reminded attendees that the United Way provides back up to families in need every day and encouraged everyone to support a United Way agency.

In addition, President Charles J. Dougherty, Executive Director of Facilities Management Rod Dobish and St. Anthony’s Post-Secondary Director Gary Eiseman each discussed the importance of the United Way and its impact on young lives.

Luncheon participants enjoyed a picnic-style lunch and contributed through raffles and a silent auction. In the spirit of giving, the Enrollment Management Group won the 50/50 and donated their winnings back to the campaign contributing to the $3,600 raised.

Duquesne has already exceeded its $85,000 monetary goal, but currently needs more than 100 employees to pledge or donate to reach its campaign target of a 35 percent participation rate. The University’s United Way campaign runs through Wednesday, Nov.  27.
