Campus Invited to Support Cancer Patients One Stitch at a Time

What began six years ago as a few staff members teaching one another how to knit and crochet has turned into an annual campus-wide event that supports local cancer patients, survivors and those impacted by the illness.

In February, Jennifer Milcarek, director of the Investment Center in the Palumbo-Donahue School of Business, and Cecilia Hughes, stewardship and gift planning support officer, will offer lessons every Thursday from noon to 1 p.m. in Room 609 of the Union to anyone who would like to make a pink scarf to comfort cancer patients and raise awareness.

Since its inception, the group has had 30 or more people attend, with employee family members and retired Duquesne employees also contributing to the project. As a result, approximately 180 scarves and shawls have been made and donated to the Hillman Cancer Center and nearby charities over the years.

People who knit and/or crochet at all skill levels are welcome. Attendees are asked to bring one or two skeins of pink yarn, size H, I or J crocheting hooks or size 9, 10 or 11 knitting needles.
