Week of Wellbeing Offers Activities for Discovering, Maintaining Good Health

Several University departments are teaming up to present various events that focus on discovering and maintaining wellness. The Week of Wellbeing will provide opportunities for faculty, staff and students to relax, be active and learn best practices for good health.

Many of these events will center on wellbeing-based techniques, such as meditation and prayer for the spirit, aerobic exercise and proper nutrition for the body, and intellectual study for the mind, all of which are designed to help participants learn to form good health habits.

“Wellbeing is ultimately an act of transmutation. Regardless of the particular wellbeing method or technique used, the goal—like with alchemy—is to take that which is base and transform it into gold,” said Dr. Ian Edwards, director of Duquesne’s Counseling and Wellbeing Center. “Consequently, stress, sadness, worry, anger and despair become the very vehicles through which genuine happiness is attained.”

Thursday, March 12

Resilience Mural

Resilience is an intrinsic part of wellbeing. Members of the Duquesne community can anonymously write about and share a personal moment of their resilience.

8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., 2nd Floor Atrium, Duquesne Union

Friday, March 13

Yoga Class with Live Music and Sound Healing

Mookshi Wellness Center yoga instructor, chant leader and singer-songwriter, Brooke Smokelin will teach a chakra yoga class accompanied by live music.

6 to 7:30 p.m., Main Studio, Power Center

Saturday, March 14

Contemplative Practice in Christianity and Hinduism: A Daylong Retreat with Russill Paul

This retreat will examine the classic contemplatives of Christianity and Hinduism. Attendees will learn the basics of contemplative practice, which include chanting and rituals.
