University Supports Bike to Work Day, National Challenge

Duquesne again will join the National Bike to Work Day celebration this Friday, May 15.

A BikeDUQ table in the Forbes Avenue surface lot next to the Red Ring will provide coffee, juice and pastries from 7:30 to 9:30 a.m. to those who venture forth on their bicycles. Members of Duquesne’s bicycle community will also share information on biking on and near campus as well as across the city.

“Commuting by bike is a great way to get to work without the hassle of sitting in traffic or paying for parking, plus you are guaranteed to burn a lot of calories,” said Dr. David Lampe, associate professor of biology and an avid cyclist who makes a daily ride from Shaler Township.

Lampe also encourages DU bike riders to sign up for the National Bike Challenge and select Duquesne as their school.

Riders record the miles they log between May 1 and Sept 30.

“With enough riders and enough miles, Duquesne might end up first among local colleges and universities,” Lampe said.

One down side: no extra credit is given for making it to the top of the Bluff—except bragging rights.
