Religion and Society Lecture Series Continues with ‘Mary and the Quran’

Faculty, staff, students and the public are invited to the upcoming Religion and Society Lecture, during which author and visiting speaker Dr. Zeki Saritoprak will share how a mutual respect for Mary, mother of Jesus, creates a common thread between Christians and Muslims.

Saritoprak, the Nursi Chair in Islamic Studies at John Carroll University, will present Mary in the Quran, on Wednesday, Oct. 14, at 4:30 p.m. in Room 719 of Fisher Hall.

“We hope that our audience will learn and appreciate how much respect Islam has for Mary,” said Dr. Marinus Iwuchukwu, associate professor of theology and chair of the Consortium for Christian-Muslim Dialogue (CCMD). “Even though Islam does not recognize her son, Jesus, as divine, it has the utmost respect for Mary as a model of faithfulness to God.”

The Religion and Society Lecture Series, organized by the CCMD in collaboration with the Turkish Cultural Center of Pittsburgh, is a new program designed to advance healthy interreligious relations and to promote open dialogue between groups as a way to build trust and mutual understanding

Hosted by the theology department, the free lecture will include light refreshments. For more information, contact Emad Mirmotahari at 412.396.6420 or visit the CCMD’s website.

The Religion and Society Lecture Series will conclude on Wednesday, Nov. 18, with The Use of Music in Christianity and Islam.
