Season One of ‘Schubert on the Bluff’ Continues, Dedicated to David Stock
The Mary Pappert School of Music’s Schubert on the Bluff concert series continues in January, but on a bittersweet note. Season one of the series, which focuses on works by Austrian composer Franz Schubert, also features compositions by School of Music Professor Emeritus David Stock, who passed away unexpectedly on Nov. 2.
The remaining two concerts of this season—one of which features a world premiere by Stock that was commissioned by the series—will be dedicated to Stock.
“David Stock, one of America’s great composers, had a close relationship with his hometown of Pittsburgh and with Duquesne University, where he served as professor of music for decades,” said David Allen Wehr, the Jack W. Geltz Distinguished Piano Chair and artistic director of the Schubert series. “Professor Stock’s music is an integral part of the programming for this season’s Schubert on the Bluff series. We honor his passing by dedicating the remaining two concerts in the series to his memory.”
Concert III: World Premiere, slated for Sunday, Jan. 10, at 3 p.m. in the PNC Recital Hall, will feature a repertoire including the world premiere of Stock’s Second Chamber Concerto and his piece Mistral, along with Schubert’s Drei Klavierstücke (Three Piano Pieces) and Piano Trio No. 1 in B-Flat Major.
Performers will include Wehr, guest pianist Cynthia Raim, and music school faculty and members of the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra:
- Gretchen Van Hoesen, adjunct professor of harp
- Charles Lirette, adjunct professor of trumpet
- Edward Stephan, adjunct professor of percussion
- Andrew Reamer, adjunct professor of percussion
- James Gorton, adjunct professor of oboe.
Also appearing will be the Duquesne Piano Trio, an ensemble consisting of Wehr; Charles Stegeman, professor of violin; and Adam Liu, adjunct professor of cello.
Audiences are invited to a pre-concert discussion featuring Wehr and Stephan, beginning at 2:30 p.m. Seating is reserved for all performances in the Schubert on the Bluff series.
