The University’s tradition of helping to make the greater Hill District and South Side neighborhoods clean and green will continue at the 27th Annual Spring Clean-Up.

The Saturday, April 16, event, sponsored by Spiritan Campus Ministry in the Division of Mission and Identity, involves hundreds of Duquesne faculty, staff and student volunteers who pick up litter, plant and do weeding in the Hill District and South Side neighborhoods.

“Spring Clean-Up is a great opportunity to work together with our neighborhood and community members,” said Campus Minister Kate Lecci, who helps to organize the event. “It’s a chance to be a good neighbor by cleaning and greening in the areas where we work, live and play.”

The event was developed to raise awareness among the participants as well as the residents of the neighborhoods, while showing the greater Pittsburgh area the importance of community involvement.

Community sponsors for this year’s Spring Clean-Up include UPMC Health Plan, UPMC Mercy, the Hill District Consensus Group and the Pennsylvania Resources Council.

Spring Clean-Up volunteers are asked to check in on the Mellon Hall Patio at 9 a.m. for registration and breakfast. After the clean-up, which is scheduled until noon, volunteers will be treated to free lunch and live music. Lunch will be provided by Taste of the Neighborhood for participants on the South Side and Z-Best Barbeque for those working in the Hill District.

“For people on campus who have not participated, it’s truly a lot of fun and a great way to meet people from the University and neighboring communities,” added Lecci.
