High School Students Invited to Summer Writing Workshop

High school students with a passion for writing and an interest to improve their skills will have the opportunity to gain one-of-a-kind experience in a college-level creative writing camp.

The 2016 Intensive Summer Creative Writing Camp for High School Students will be held Monday, June 20, through Friday, June 24, on campus. The workshop, hosted by the McAnulty College and Graduate School of Liberal Arts, provides instruction, materials and lunches at a cost of $425 for new students and $375 for returning students.

Students will be able to choose either poetry or fiction to focus on throughout the week, and will work alongside professional writers and peers to hone their skills, develop their writing and receive personal feedback. They also will learn how the publication process works first-hand. A small journal will be put together to showcase the week’s most successful writing.

The poetry track will focus on various ways to appreciate and understand poetry. Students will read, listen to and write poetry as well as provide constructive feedback to their peers in the class. Participants will have the opportunity to choose the direction of the lessons based on their interests.

The fiction track will focus on the reading and writing of short stories as well as mastering specific craft issues such as dialogue, point of view and character. Students in this track also will provide constructive feedback to fellow students’ writing.

At the end of the camp, the students will have the opportunity to participate in a public reading, which friends and family may attend.

Class sizes are limited to 12 students each. For more information, including registration, visit the program’s website, email writingcamp@duq.edu or call 412.396.6428.
