‘Summer Music on the Bluff’ Promises Classical Piano Pops

The Mary Pappert School of Music will host a classical piano pops performance during its first Summer Music on the Bluff concert next month.

David Allen Wehr

Summer Music on the Bluff, which is scheduled for Saturday, July 9, at 4:30 p.m. in the PNC Recital Hall, will feature David Allen Wehr, the Jack W. Geltz Distinguished Piano Chair in the music school.

Wehr, who serves as artistic director for this concert as well as the music school’s many composer-themed concert series, will perform solo numbers by Claude Debussy, George Gershwin and contemporary jazz pianist/composer Joe Utterback.

Saxophonist and Performance Chair James Houlik will join Wehr during the concert for two numbers, Ballad in Memory of Shirley Horn and Farewell Patagonia.

Summer Music on the Bluff, according to Wehr, was put together due to popular demand from regular attendees of the music school’s concert series. “A number of our patrons spoke to (School of Music) Dean Seth Beckman and told him that they really miss having concerts between February and September,” said Wehr. “I think it’s very nice that our audiences want more.”

“I’m so pleased that we are able to now expand our ‘On The Bluff’ series to include this summer offering as well,” added Beckman. “The July 9 concert promises to be a very special event.”

During the concert, Wehr will talk to audience members, sharing information about the pieces he will perform. “It will be a classical pops concert—something light, summer and cool. There will be many numbers that are familiar to people,” said Wehr, who did many community concerts for general audiences in the past during his career. “I love playing this kind of program.”

A reception will immediately follow the concert. Seating is reserved for Summer Music on the Bluff, and admission is $10. For more information and to purchase tickets, visit www.duq.edu/bluffmusic.
