FAST Program Welcomes New Students and Families

The incoming class of freshmen as well as new transfer students will have the opportunity to make their transition to college life at Duquesne better by attending the Freshman Advisement Summer Transition (FAST) program, which will be held Tuesday, July 12, through Friday, July 15.

FAST is an optional program ideal for students looking to kick start their college experience prior to starting classes in the fall. The annual program, coordinated by Adam Wasilko, director of freshmen development and special services, draws more than 2,000 attendees.

“Right now, we have approximately 930 students registered for the program, and 1,621 guests,” said Wasilko. “That is slightly over 2,500 people, compared to last year’s 2,200.”

Biomedical engineering, business, education, health sciences, and natural and environmental sciences majors are invited to spend the day on campus on Wednesday, July 13, or Friday, July 15. Liberal arts, music, nursing and pharmacy majors are invited to visit campus on Tuesday, July 12, or Thursday, July 14.

During FAST, activities offered to new students include:

  • Meeting Dr. Douglas K. Frizzell, the vice president for student life
  • Meeting academic advisors
  • Learning more about student support services, commuter affairs, residence life, DORI, the Honors College, individual schools and wellbeing initiatives
  • Having a student ID photo taken
  • Setting up a student bank account
  • Ordering/purchasing textbooks and a computer
  • Touring residence halls
  • Learning about the Orientation program
  • Connecting with future classmates.

FAST attendees can use their smartphones to find the program’s schedule, view a campus map and review other helpful resources via the FAST mobile site at www.duq.edu/fastmobile.
