Drug Take-Back Day Enables Safe Disposal of Medication

Members of Duquesne’s campus community can turn in unused or expired prescriptions and over-the-counter medications during a Drug Take-Back Day planned for this Friday, Oct. 21.

This one-day event, designed to provide a safe, convenient and responsible means of disposing of unwanted drugs, will run from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the rotunda of the Bayer Learning Center.

Drug take-back days address a vital safety and health issue by educating the public about the potential abuse of medications and the environmental dangers associated with unsafe disposal.

The following will be accepted for proper disposal with no questions asked:

  • Unused, expired or recalled prescriptions or over-the-counter medications
  • Labeled or unlabeled medications
  • Ointments, creams, lotions or powders
  • Inhalers and nebulizer solutions.

The following will not be accepted:

  • Needles, EpiPen injectors, syringes, lancets or any other sharps
  • Thermometers, glass or durable medical equipment
  • Marijuana or methamphetamines.

Participants are asked to leave medicines in their original containers and mark out personal information.

Drug Take-Back Day is sponsored by the School of Pharmacy and Graduate School of Pharmaceutical Sciences; H.E.A.R.T. (Helping Educate and Rehabilitate Together), and the Department of Public Safety.
