Film Festival Presents ‘Habemus Papam,’ a Comedy about a Reluctant Pope

The Honorary Consulate of Italy/Pittsburgh in collaboration with the DU Model European Union Club presents Habemus Papam (We Have a Pope), the fourth installment of the 2016 Italian Film Festival.

This Italian movie subtitled in English is a 2011 comedy/drama about Cardinal Melville, who is caught completely off guard when he is elected Pope. Never the front runner, he panics as he is presented to the faithful in St. Peter’s Square. To prevent a world-wide crisis, the Vatican calls in an unlikely psychiatrist to find out what is wrong with the new Pope. As the world nervously waits outside, inside the therapist tries to find a solution. But Cardinal Melville is adamant—he does not want the job, or at least needs time to think it over.

The movie will be shown on Thursday, Nov. 17, at 6 p.m. in Room 608 of the Union. Admission is free, but donations will be accepted to support earthquake relief efforts of the Italian Red Cross. Sales of raffle tickets for gift cards to local restaurants will also benefit the Italian Red Cross.
