Retired United States Steel Exec, Alum to Give Law Commencement Address

Gretchen R. Haggerty, retired executive vice president and chief financial officer (CFO) from United States Steel Corporation, will return to her alma mater to deliver the School of Law Commencement address on Sunday, June 4.

Haggerty is a 1980 graduate of the School of Law, which will honor 129 graduates at an 11 a.m. ceremony at the A.J. Palumbo Center.

A current member of the School of Law Advisory Board, Haggerty has a longstanding relationship with the school. In 2016, she co-chaired the school’s Tribute to Ken Gormley event, which honored the dean before he stepped into his current role as Duquesne president. Proceeds from the event supported the law school’s Call to Excellence Fund. Haggerty was honored by the law school during its 2011 centennial; was named Woman of the Year by the Women’s Law Association in 1993; and, that same year, was inducted into the Duquesne University Century Club of Distinguished Alumni

Professionally, Haggerty retired from United States Steel Corporation in 2013 after a 37-year career there. In addition to her executive vice president and CFO roles, she also served as chairman of the U.S. Steel and Carnegie Pension Fund and its Investment Committee. Haggerty earned her law degree from Duquesne attending the evening division program while working full-time at U.S. Steel.

Haggerty is currently a director of Teleflex Incorporated and USG Corporation as well as the Strategic Investment Fund and the United Way of Southwestern Pennsylvania.

The School of Law Commencement Ceremony will be preceded by a 9 a.m. Commencement Mass in the University Chapel.
