ALL Series Will Explore Composer Brahms ‘Before the Beard’
The early career of German composer/pianist Johannes Brahms will be explored at the next installment of the Adult Learning & Lecture (ALL) Series, presented by the City Music Center.
Johannes Brahms: Before the Beard will be held on Saturday, Dec. 2, at 2 p.m. in the PNC Recital Hall of the Mary Pappert School of Music. The presentation will feature David Allen Wehr, the Jack W. Geltz Distinguished Piano Chair in the music school.
“The image of Brahms as a grouchy old fogey comes almost exclusively from his later years,” said Tom Carsecka, director of the City Music Center. “His exciting early career and life will be examined, along with excerpts from his ‘Ballades’ and ‘Waltzes.’”
Brahms composed symphonies, concerti, chamber music, piano works and choral compositions. Widely considered one of the greatest composers of the 19th century, he was also one of the leading musicians of the Romantic era. Brahms began playing piano at age seven and was an accomplished musician by the time he was a teenager.
The ALL Series was developed to provide engaging, educational experiences for adult learners interested in expanding their awareness and understanding of music and its impact (past, present and future) on business, culture, medicine, politics and the ever- changing social landscape.
