Campus Invited to Remember Martin Luther King, Jr. at Luncheon, Breakfast Events

Faculty, staff and students are invited to celebrate the life and legacy of the late Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. at two upcoming events.

The Office of Diversity and Inclusion (ODI) is hosting a luncheon on Friday, Jan. 12, and the Allegheny County Bar Association’s (ACBA) Home S. Brown Division is hosting the 19th annual Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Prayer Breakfast and Program on Monday, Jan. 15.

The ODI’s free lunch will be held from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. in the Africa Room, that will include a short prayer, lunch and keynote address by Brian Burley, chief executive officer of Burley + Company Enterprises.

A University of Pittsburgh Katz Graduate School of Business MBA graduate, Burley was named a BMe Community Leader in 2015 for his work to promote positive imagery to the future generations of Black Pittsburgh. He is also the leader of YNGBLKPGH, a social justice movement that highlights stories of more than 140 of Pittsburgh’s young professionals, exposing possibilities for future leaders.

Space for the event is limited. RSVP to Amber Satterwhite at satterwhitea@duq.edu by Thursday, Jan. 11, at 4 p.m. For additional information about this event, contact the ODI at 412.396.1117.

The ACBA’s free prayer breakfast will be held at 7:30 a.m., with a brief program at 8:30 a.m., at Ebenezer Missionary Baptist Church located at 2001 Wylie Avenue in Pittsburgh. This event commemorates King’s life and his contributions that led to changes in law and social justice.

Attorney Paul H. Titus, counsel at Schnader Harrison Segal and Lewis, LLP, will be presented with the 2018 Drum Major for Justice Award, an honor that originates from one of King’s final sermons.

The University is providing free transportation to and from this prayer breakfast, which is open to the public. Attendees can board buses in front of the Duquesne Union at 7:30 a.m. and will return immediately after the event’s program.

Registration is required. Contact the ODI at 412.396.1117 for further assistance.
