Founders Week Events Kick Off Next Monday
Faculty and staff can still register for the various activities and events of Founders Week 2018, the annual celebration to honor the legacy, vision and values of Duquesne’s Spiritan founders.
This year’s Founders Week, featuring the theme of Wellbeing in the Spirit, focuses on how the idea that wellbeing touches all aspects of life—psychological, physical, emotional, social and spiritual. Participants are invited to find wellbeing through their relationship with the Divine and by connecting to others through the week’s activities and offerings.
The week’s activities include:
Monday, Jan 29
Wellbeing and Student Success in the Spiritan Tradition Luncheon, noon, Africa Room
Undergraduates will reflect on and share how Spiritan values help them develop the knowledge and skills needed to succeed. Held in collaboration with the Center for Catholic Faith and Culture and the Center for Teaching Excellence.
Fit Bash, 4 to 7 p.m., second floor, Power Center
This wellbeing event will feature healthy eating demos, body fat screenings, fitness demonstrations, Q&A with a personal trainer, meditation practice and personal fitness prescriptions. Sponsored by the Power Center.
Tuesday, Jan. 30
Founders Week Lunch: Blanket Making for Appalachian Families, noon, Africa Room
Attendees will help make fleece blankets for families in the West Virginia region of Appalachia. Past participants of the University’s Appalachian Cross-Culture Mission Experience will share stories of their trips. Held in conjunction with the Spiritan Campus Ministry Libermann Luncheon Series.
Evening of Flights, 4:30 p.m., Africa Room
Participants will hear from Spiritans about their flights around the globe and enjoy a beer flight and hors d’oeuvres. Proceeds from this over-21 event will benefit the Spiritan Secondary School in Tengeru, Tanzania.
Cost is $25. RSVP is required.
Wednesday, Jan. 31
Midweek Mindfulness Meditation and Lunch, noon, Africa Room
Learn about mindfulness and how to practice meditation to center one’s self.
Music and Wellbeing Around the World concert, 7:30 p.m., PNC Recital Hall, School of Music
Enjoy an evening of music and explore how music and wellbeing are intimately connected in cultures around the world and learn about the therapeutic value of music in the United States.
Friday, Feb. 2
Mass for the Feast Day of the Venerable Francis Libermann, C.S.Sp., noon, University Chapel of the Holy Spirit
Vespers and Reception, 4:30 p.m., Trinity Hall
Attend this traditional evening prayer and the reception immediately following.
