Excellent Educators to be Recognized at Upcoming Award Ceremony

The Center for Teaching Excellence (CTE) will recognize faculty and graduate students for their creativity, effectiveness and innovation in the classroom at the upcoming Celebration of Teaching Excellence award ceremony.

University Provost Dr. Timothy Austin will present the awards at the annual event, which will take place on Tuesday, April 17, from 3:30 to 5 p.m. in the Power Center Ballroom.

“Duquesne has many wonderful teachers who have documented their teaching and had it evaluated by peers, but through this ceremony, we celebrate the teaching and learning that takes place every day,” said Dr. Laurel Willingham-McLain, director of faculty development and teaching excellence. “This learning includes the professional development that teachers themselves engage in through mentoring, workshops, blog posts and retreats.”

The Creative Teaching Awards recognize faculty who utilize creativity and innovation in their teaching methods and demonstrate the impact that these methods have on student learning. This year’s awardees are Dr. Bryan Menk, School of Business; Drs. Wilson Meng and Lauren O’Donnell, School of Pharmacy; and Dr. Waganesh Zeleke, School of Education.

The Graduate Student Award for Excellence in Teaching recognizes teaching effectiveness by graduate students through a portfolio process in which they demonstrate rigorous student learning, reflection on feedback and leadership in teaching among graduate students.

The graduate award recipients are:

  • Elizabeth Bennett, McAnulty College and Graduate School of Liberal Arts
  • Farhana Islam, School of Pharmacy
  • Sara McClelland, Bayer School of Natural and Environmental Sciences
  • Josie Rush, McAnulty College and Graduate School of Liberal Arts.

In addition, Graduate students who have earned the Certificate of University Teaching as well as more than 100 Duquesne peer leaders who have served as workshop presenters, teaching award committee members, faculty near-peer mentors and blog contributors will be recognized.

The event will include special recognition of the following Association of American Colleges and Universities’ K. Patricia Cross Future Leaders nominees and winner:
