More than 150 high school students will visit Duquesne for its inaugural Pharmacy Exploration Day, a new summer program designed to help students consider a career in the pharmacy field.

Held from Monday, June 25, through Friday, June 29, the program will allow students to spend a day visiting pharmacy labs and participating in educational, interactive activities. Students can explore “a day in the life of a pharmacist” and learn about the different job options of the field.

During their visit, students will have the opportunity to work with SimMan, an advanced mannequin-like patient simulator that replicates various issues like an irregular heartbeat, asthma attacks and flu symptoms. They also will work with School of Pharmacy faculty members in the Giant Eagle Center for Pharmacy Practice to learn to identify and treat such conditions.

At the University’s fully equipped manufacturing research and development laboratory, students will see how pills are made and can design their own formulation. Working from quality specifications, they will learn how blending, granulation, compression and coating are used to create a finished product.

Students interested in attending the program should contact Jason Stack at stackj2@duq.edu.
