The class of 2022, which includes 1,512 freshmen, is the fifth largest in University history. It also is the third most diverse freshman class, with 17 percent of minorities comprising the group. The students’ mean SAT score of 1,214 is one of the highest in Duquesne’s history.

“Diversity—including racial, socioeconomic and geographic factors—is a key focus for enrollment management,” said Paul-James Cukanna, vice president of enrollment management. “We have worked hard to develop initiatives to sustain diversity and are pleased to have such a diverse incoming class, which adds so much to the culture, sophistication and spirit of our University community.”

About 95 percent of incoming freshmen said Duquesne was their top choice. In a survey, students said their main reasons for choosing Duquesne was its urban location, programs of study, size and academic reputation. The student acceptance rate was about 72 percent, one of the most selective in University history.

Some other freshmen class notes:

  • 28 percent are from out of state, representing 31 states and Puerto Rico
  • Students are from 11 countries, including China, Germany, India and Pakistan
  • 25 percent have relatives who are Duquesne alumni.

In addition to the freshmen, nearly 200 transfer students started this fall.
