Candlelight Vigil Honoring Tree of Life Victims Set for Friday Evening

A candlelight vigil to mark the 80th anniversary of Kristallnacht and to honor the 11 victims of the tragic shooting at the Tree of Life Synagogue will take place Friday, Nov. 9, at 7:30 p.m. on Academic Walk in front of the Union.

Kristallnacht, also referred to as the “night of broken glass,” occurred Nov. 9 to Nov. 10, 1938, when Nazis in Germany vandalized thousands of Jewish homes, schools, businesses and synagogues and killed nearly 100 Jews. In addition, the Nazis arrested 30,000 Jewish men and sent them to concentration camps.

Speakers will include:

  • Daniel Burston, associate professor of psychology
  • Laurie Kessler, assistant director of the University’s Center for Counseling and Wellbeing
  • Eric Chatterjee, president of Student Government Association (SGA)
  • Will Adams, associate professor of psychology.

The vigil also will include music from Dr. Noah Potvin, assistant professor of music therapy in both the Mary Pappert School of Music and the School of Nursing.

The event is sponsored by the Jewish Studies Forum in partnership with the University Center for Counseling and Wellbeing, the McAnulty College of Liberal Arts, SGA and the Office of Student Diversity, Inclusion and Advancement.

The vigil is free and open to the public.
