Spiritan, Former Duquesne Professor Appointed Archbishop of Accra, Ghana

Pope Francis appointed the Most Rev. Bishop John Bonaventure Kwofie, C.S.Sp., as the new Archbishop of Accra, Ghana, effective Jan. 2. He succeeds Archbishop Charles Palmer-Buckle, who now serves as archbishop of Cape Coast.

Kwofie has served as bishop of the Sekondi-Takoradi Diocese in Cape Coast, Ghana, since July 2014. He will serve as the apostolic administrator of the Sekondi-Takoradi Diocese until a new bishop is appointed there.

A native of Apowa, Ghana, Kwofie is a member of the Spiritan Congregation, which founded Duquesne University. He served as an assistant theology professor at Duquesne from 2013-2014, during which time he taught an undergraduate course in critical examination of biblical and historical perspectives.

Kwofie has served in a variety of leadership roles with the Spiritan Congregation, including vice president of the Conference of Major Superiors for Africa; provincial superior of the Congregation of West Africa; coordinator of the Continental Conference of Major Superiors for Africa; and first assistant to the superior general of the congregation.

In addition to his bachelor’s degree in theology from St. Paul’s College Seminary in Liberia and Pontifical Urban University in Rome, Kwofie continued his studies in pastoral leadership formation at Lumko Institute, South Africa. He also earned a certificate from the Ghana Institute of Management and Professional Studies in Accra.
