Faculty, Staff asked to Remind Students to Call Health Services First

Faculty and staff are asked to remind students that ‘typical’ walk-in services at Health Services have been adjusted to encourage a CALL-FIRST plan for all students seeking information, appointments or any other services. Health Services does not see faculty or staff, only full-time registered students.

With the rapidly changing conditions on campus, Health Services wants all students to call first at 412.396.2617 and talk to the triage nurse. In addition, their main number, 412.396.1650, has an ‘auto-assist’ menu that directs callers to a COVID information recording. It provides a dedicated number, 412.298.8980, for COVID questions and/or triage. Health Services’ after-hours message also provides detailed information.

Due to social distancing recommendations, Health Services prefers that students do not walk in. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, social distancing means that individuals remain out of congregate settings, avoid mass gatherings and maintain distance (approximately 6 feet or 2 meters) from others when possible. By calling Health Services first, students can be scheduled to be seen.

“Positive outcomes always emerge from negative situations,” said Dessa Mvros, director of Health Services. “If anything, good hygiene practices should be in place at all times. Things like ‘cover your cough,’ proper handwashing, frequent cleansing of surfaces and staying at home if sick, among others, may now become standard practices.”

Health Services’ modified hours includes student appointments available from 9:30 to 11:45 a.m. and 1 to 4:15 p.m., Monday through Friday. The office is closed daily for cleaning from 12 to 1 p.m.

The staff at Health Services appreciates the cooperation and help of faculty and staff in encouraging students to call first.
