Stepping Up: Joseph Seidel, School of Nursing

When Duquesne shifted to a remote learning model in March, Joseph Seidel led the charge to provide fully virtual learning operations for the school’s nursing students and faculty.

As director of technology for the School of Nursing, Joseph transitioned his team to provide technological support for 124 online courses, 5,707 student proctored exams, virtual labs, dissertation defenses and the development of a School of Nursing HELP desk to manage unique online testing concerns.

“The School of Nursing has 1,316 students, and clinical nursing education requires a significant amount of theory and skills testing,” explains School of Nursing Dean Dr. Mary Ellen Glasgow.

Students in the School of Nursing are required to take standardized tests to prepare for their licensure exams. The school was required to have a virtual human proctor to administer each final exam. According to Glasgow, Joseph’s department managed the scheduling for all 5,707 exams, including managing additional testing times, supporting students in need of accommodations and providing technical support.

“Mr. Seidel worked very long hours, tirelessly responding to faculty and students’ countless emails and phone calls for technical support related to testing issues and other technical concerns. His dedication is endless,” says Glasgow. “I can think of no other individual that pivoted as quickly and provided this level of support during the pandemic.”

Thank you, Joseph, for your commitment to supporting School of Nursing students and faculty with their online learning needs!
