New ODI Space to Encourage Students to Work, Learn Together

The Office of Diversity and Inclusion (ODI) is moving to a larger, brighter, more-prominent space on the third floor of the Student Union, expanding horizons for educational opportunities.

The new space will be located in the 302 Suite—the former home of Student Government Association and the Center of Student Involvement. ODI currently is located on the bottom floor of the Union. The move will particularly increase ODI’s capabilities to serve the student population, encouraging students to work and learn together.

“A lot of students honestly don’t want to come down to the basement to hang out,” says Dr. Anthony Kane, director of diversity and inclusion. “This move gets us right in front of the students near the other offices students frequently visit, such as the Center for Student Involvement, Office of Freshmen Development, and Greek Life.”

The project is expected to begin in early February and be completed by the end of March. The move is in response to student requests for the ODI and Black Student Union to occupy more prominent spaces in the Union building.

“We wanted a space where students feel as if they can come in at any time, not just during difficult times. This space will create a greater sense of belonging, where students feel comfortable stopping by and hanging out,” said Kane.

“The new and improved space will allow us to continue providing the ‘home away from home’ relationship with our students,” added Amber Satterwhite, ODI administrative assistant.
