Faculty & Staff Spotlight
What have Drs. Lucía Osa-Melero and Deborah Dillon been up to?
Dr. Lucia Osa-Melero, associate professor in the McAnulty College and Graduate School of Liberal Arts, along with students in her Spanish conversation and composition II W-CE course, recently notified The Hastings Center that one of its videos included incorrect automated subtitles.
The Hastings Center video raises awareness of the dangers of the spread of COVID-19 and ways to slow the spread to Spanish-speaking communities. Osa-Melero and her students offered their skills to fix the subtitles in Spanish and make the necessary grammatical corrections.
The Hastings Center was established in 1969 as an independent, non-profit, interdisciplinary research institute based in New York. In their work to correct the video’s errors, Osa-Melero and her students helped many hearing-impaired viewers understand the true translation of the video, stressing the importance of learning together and helping the world around them.
Dr. Deborah Dillon, clinical associate professor of nursing, recently had her book Successful Transition to Practice: A Guide for the New Nurse Practitioner published by McGraw-Hill Education/Medical.
A teacher-scholar, Dillon’s book helps nurses learn together as they work to become nurse practitioners. It addresses the most confusing aspects of transitioning from studies to full-time work, including application for licensure, expectations in an interview, insurance needs, hospital credentialing and more.
