Reminder: ‘The Saint John’s Bible’ Director to Give Public Lecture

In conjunction with Duquesne’s display of The Saint John’s Bible Heritage Edition, Gumberg Library and the Division of Mission and Identity will host a public lecture on the processes, tools and methods used in the creation of the first handwritten illuminated Bible to be commissioned by a Benedictine monastery in more than 500 years.

Tim Ternes, director of The Saint John’s Bible at the Hill Museum and Manuscript Library, will lead the discussion Tuesday, Nov. 19, from 5:30 to 7 p.m. in the Power Center Ballroom.

A celebrated work of art and theology, The Saint John’s Bible Heritage Edition will be displayed in the fourth-floor Popular Reading Room at Gumberg Library from Monday, Nov. 11, through Friday, Dec. 20. The Heritage Edition is a full-size fine art edition of the original manuscript. 

Faculty and staff are also invited to a private reception and discussion with Ternes, sponsored by the Center for Catholic Faith and Culture (CCFC) and Gumberg Library, on Tuesday, Nov. 19, from 4:15 to 5:15 p.m. in the Power Center Ballroom. Illustration, Illumination, Imagination in The Saint John’s Bible is part of the CCFC’s Catholic Artistic Imagination Series, which celebrates the social, communicative and humanizing power of the arts from a Catholic perspective. Space is limited. RSVP online by Wednesday, Nov. 13.

In addition, faculty and staff are invited to a special Libermann Luncheon with Ternes on Wednesday, Nov. 20, at noon in the Africa Room of the Student Union. The Heritage Edition will be on site, and Ternes will offer remarks. To RSVP for the Libermann Luncheon, email Jody Iannelli.
