Vote for DU Professor’s Project in National Science Challenge

If a picture paints a thousand words, then a visualization of complex scientific material promotes understanding.

Such is the case with the Spiral of Life, a new, accessible symbol for the evolution of life, first conceptualized by Dr. John A. Pollock, associate professor of biological sciences, and brought to life by artist Joana Ricou.

The mural—versions of which are on display at the Pittsburgh Zoo, the National Aviary and the Carnegie Science Center—is now a finalist in the International Science & Engineering Visualization Challenge. In addition to the judges’ awards, an award will be given to the public’s favorite project, as determined by online votes.

Members of the Duquesne community can vote for the mural. The entry can be viewed and votes can be cast at the International Science & Engineering Visualization Challenge’s website.

“Our votes count,” Pollock said. “We’re proud that this piece is already in the top 10 in the nation for art on science, but it would be nice to be the people’s choice, too.”
