First-Ever Family Weekend at Duquesne Kicks Off Friday

In the tradition of the successful Freshman Parent Weekend and Junior/Sophomore Weekend at Duquesne, the Division of Student Life will host the first-ever Family Weekend from Friday, Oct. 19, to Sunday, Oct. 21.

Family Weekend will offer a variety of activities for the parents and siblings of current students and will provide the opportunity to socialize with other families from the campus community.

Some of the scheduled events for the weekend include:

Friday, Oct. 19

  • Dukesfest, 6 p.m., A.J. Palumbo Center: This free event, open to the public, will provide a preview of the 2012-2013 men’s and women’s basketball programs, including comments from coaches Jim Ferry and Suzie McConnell-Serio; an autograph session with players; a performance by the Dukettes and more. Prizes will be awarded, including a half-court shot opportunity to win a car courtesy of Dean Honda.

Saturday, Oct. 20

  • Open Houses: Academic open houses for each of the schools will be held from 10:30 a.m. to noon. Tours of the campus residence halls will be held from 1:30 to 3 p.m. In addition, information sessions will be held for the Honors College, the Commuter Center and the Study Abroad program.
  • Duquesne Dukes vs. Sacred Heart Pioneers football game, 12:10 p.m., Rooney Field.
  • The Magic of Michael Grandinetti, 7:30 p.m., A.J. Palumbo Center: Alumnus and celebrated illusionist Michael Grandinetti will push the boundaries of magic during this first-ever performance at his alma mater. Tickets, which are available for $15 online or by calling 412.396.6209, must be purchased in advance.

Sunday, Oct. 21

  • Mass and Brunch: Family Weekend will conclude with Mass in the Power Center Ballroom at 9 a.m., followed by a President’s Farewell Brunch in the Union Ballroom.
