Duquesne Community Invited to Attend Founders Week Events

The campus community is invited to register for Founders Week 2013, the annual celebration to honor the legacy, vision and values of Duquesne’s Spiritan founders, from Tuesday, Jan. 29, through Thursday, Jan. 31.

This year, Founders Week focuses on the 50th anniversary of the papal encyclical Pacem in Terris, the first letter in which Pope John XXIII addressed “all people of good will,” not just the Catholic faithful. Pacem in Terris was intended to highlight the path to peace through collaboration and the respect of all people. Founders Week presentations will focus on Pacem in Terris as well as the peace-building work performed by the Spiritans in this light.

Events for Founders Week include:

Tuesday, Jan. 29

Mass in Celebration of the Feast of Venerable Francis Libermann at noon in the University Chapel.

Celebrating 50 Years of John XXIII Pacem in Terris: Its Relevance Today and Tomorrow, featuring the Rev. Kenneth Himes, O.F.M., associate professor of theology at Boston College, from 3 to 5 p.m., Power Center Ballroom. Respondents to the presentation include:

  • Robert S. Barker, Distinguished Professor of Law
  • Dr. Lisa Lopez Levers, professor of counselor education and supervision, and the Rev. Francis Philben, C.S.Sp., Endowed Chair in African Studies
  • Dr. Sarah Louise MacMillen, associate professor of sociology
  • Dr. Alan R. Miciak, dean of the Palumbo-Donahue School of Business

A reception will immediately follow in the Shepperson Suite.

Wednesday, Jan. 30

Catholic Strategies of International Conflict Resolution: Will the Rise of ‘Islamo-Liberals’ Reduce Western-Islamic Hostilities?, presented by Dr. Mark L. Haas, associate professor of political science, from noon to 1 p.m. in the Africa Room.

Pacem in Terris: Exploring the Interpersonal Ordering of God’s Household, Questioning the World’s Disorder and Building Bridges for the Sake of the Common Good, presented by Dr. Miguel Diaz, former U.S. Ambassador to the Holy See and professor of faith and culture at the University of Dayton, from 4 to 5 p.m. in the Power Center Ballroom. A reception will immediately follow in the Shepperson Suite.

Thursday, Jan. 31

Buffet lunch and presentation: Perspectives on Catholic Peacebuilding Since Pacem in Terris, featuring the Rev. Brian Starken, C.S.Sp., former provincial superior of the Spiritan Province of Ireland, from noon to 1 p.m. in the Africa Room.

Vespers—Liturgy of Peace, from 4:30 to 5 p.m., Trinity Hall. A Spiritan reception will immediately follow.
