Annual SLP Symposium to Focus on Auditory Processing Disorders

The Department of Speech-Language Pathology (SLP) will host its fourth annual symposium, The Evidence Supporting Central Auditory Processing Disorders (CAPD) and Counseling, at 8:30 a.m. on Friday, March 22, in the Power Center Ballroom.

Dr. Kris English

CAPD is a complex problem that affects how the brain and ears work together to process spoken language. The disorder makes it difficult for a child to recognize and interpret the difference between verbal instructions and background noise. The symposium will also will address the interpersonal skills clinicians use to help their patients handle the challenges of living with communication disorders.

Featured speaker Dr. Kris English, a former Rangos School faculty member and current professor of speech-language pathology and audiology at the University of Akron, will host the events two sessions that will:

  • Explore auditory processing disorders from a neurological perspective across the lifespan
  • Review the current evidence available regarding treatment efficacy
  • Describe the link between communication skills, trust and patient adherence to clinician recommendations.

“I’m thrilled that Dr. English will be returning to the Bluff to speak to our group about such a hot topic,” said Lori Marra, a clinical instructor for the SLP department, who organized the event. “SLPs work very closely with audiologists and she will be able to present information that will be applicable to clinicians working in both schools and medical facilities. Specifically, her expertise in the area of counseling will be a valuable feature of her presentation.”
