Numerous Events Scheduled to Celebrate Black History Month

The Office of Multicultural Affairs has collaborated with different campus organizations on a full schedule of events throughout February to celebrate Back History Month.

Black History Month 2015“We have a lot of unique, new and educational events that we have put together for Black History Month,” said Jeff Mallory, director of multicultural affairs. “It is our hope that everyone on campus—regardless of race and ethnicity—will take some time to participate in the events and also engage in healthy dialogue.”

The School of Law is co-sponsoring a Black History Month lecture with Dr. Paul Finkelman, the President William McKinley Distinguished Professor of Law and Public Policy at Albany Law School, on Wednesday, Feb. 11, at 11:45 a.m. in Room 303 of the law school. Finkelman’s presentation, Abraham Lincoln and the Problem of Slavery, will examine how Lincoln, a successful railroad lawyer and amateur constitutional theorist of 1861, found the constitutional power to bring an end to slavery and become the great emancipator. Lunch will be provided and participants are asked to RSVP online.

In addition, the law school and the Black Law Student Association are co-sponsoring Dine and Dialogue with the Honorable Joseph K. Williams, III, on Tuesday, Feb. 17, from 5 to 6 p.m. in the school’s fourth floor faculty lounge. Williams, a judge on the Allegheny County Court of Common Pleas, will lead a discussion on police brutality and race relations in Pittsburgh and America at large. RSVP is required.

Another notable event, Know Your Rights, will bring both City of Pittsburgh Police and Duquesne Public Safety officers together in an effort to inform and discuss the rights of all public citizens. Co-sponsored by the Office of Multicultural Affairs and the Department of Public Safety, this event will be held on Thursday, Feb. 12, at 6:30 p.m. in Room 105 of College Hall.
