Ghanaian Dance Performance Marks End of Current Artistic Imagination Series

The seventh and final installment of the 2014-15 Catholic Artistic Imagination Series sponsored by the Center for the Catholic Intellectual Tradition will be an interactive performance of traditional music and dance from Ghana.

Fume Fume: An Encounter with a Traditional Dance from Ghana will engage the participants by encouraging them to sing, perform rhythms and try some Fume Fume dance movements led by Dr. Joseph Sheehan, assistant professor of music. The event will be held on Monday, April 13, from 4 to 5:30 p.m. in the Africa Room of the Union.

Fume Fume is a demonstration of traditional Ghanaian music, which often combines song, rhythm and dance into an immersive, communal experience shared by people of different ages, backgrounds and musical abilities. The music is meant to uncover relationships between movement, language and rhythm that allows for creativity and flexibility. The dance is designed to reveal a wonderful, and possibly new, approach to performance practice that contrasts with many Western musical activities.

Faculty, staff and graduate students are welcome to attend. Space is limited. RSVP by emailing Judi O’Brien.
