Philosophy Department’s New Lecture Series Centers on Contemporary Issues

Beginning this September, the Department of Philosophy will host The Examined Life, a semester-long, monthly lecture series that will focus on philosophical insights into contemporary issues.

The Examined Life speaker series will offer a wide ranging introduction to philosophical ideas, highlighting the rich contribution of Duquesne’s philosophy department to some of the most pressing questions of our age,” said Dr. Tom Eyers, assistant professor of philosophy and coordinator of the series.

Dr. Patrick Miller, associate professor of philosophy at Duquesne, will kick off the series with Philosophy and the University on Friday, Sept. 18, at noon in the Africa Room. A free boxed lunch will be provided at this and all talks.

All future lectures in this series will be held at noon in the Africa Room in the Duquesne Union and will include:

  • Philosophy and Art, Dr. Tom Eyers, on Friday, Oct. 23
  • Philosophy East and West, Dr. L. Michael Harrington, associate professor of philosophy, on Friday, Nov. 13
  • Creativity and the Philosophical Life, Dr. Mark Anderson, professor and chair of the Department of Art at Baylor University, on Friday, Dec. 4.

The Examined Life lecture series, which is free and open to the campus community, was made possible through a donation from alumnus David Cale.
