Academic Leadership Development to be Offered to Department Chairs

The Office of Academic Affairs is continuing to provide an opportunity for professional development through Promoting Departmental Leadership: A Series for Academic Chairs.

The fall workshop, How Mission Informs Hiring and Faculty Development, is slated for this Friday, Sept. 18, and will be led by Dr. Darlene Weaver, director of the Center for the Catholic Intellectual Tradition and associate professor of theology.

“Department chairs provide critical leadership to their departments by encouraging faculty to achieve excellence in teaching and scholarship, and by supporting student learning and development through attention to curriculum and outcomes,” said Dr. Alexandra Gregory, associate provost for academic affairs.

Departmental chairs have been invited to participate in sessions designed to:

  • Build community across Duquesne by addressing the needs of new and experienced chairs, and by bringing them together to learn from and support one another
  • Communicate expectations for the University’s department chairs
  • Explore best practices in departmental leadership in higher education
  • Respond to requests for training and materials
  • Encourage attendance at national institutes on academic leadership so that chairs can bring ideas back to the group.

Chairs attending are asked to RSVP to Nancy Schmidt at 412.396.4019.
