Forensic Fridays Session Asks, ‘What’s in Your Mobile Device?’

As the very public legal battle over access to a terrorism suspect’s smartphone rages on between Apple and the FBI, the Wecht Institute will address questions that have resulted from the issue at its next Forensic Friday session.

What’s in Your Mobile Device? Forensic Science in the Portable Digital Age will be held on Friday, March 11, from 1 to 4:30 p.m. in the Africa Room of the Union.

Hosted by the Wecht Institute of Forensic Science and Law, in partnership with InfraGard-Pittsburgh, the session will look at questions such as:

• What is encryption, and how impenetrable is it?
• Do the police always need a warrant to search a mobile device?
• What kinds of data would I be surprised to find in my phone?

What’s in Your Mobile Device? also will examine the kinds of data stored in cell carrier systems and the legal standards for access, including court orders, subpoenas and consent.

Presenters include FBI Special Agent Gregg Frankhouser; technology litigators David Ries and Elizabeth Collura of Clark Hill PLC; and digital forensics expert Brett Creasy of consulting firm bit-x-bit.

Continuing education credits will be offered both onsite and online for qualified registrants. Duquesne University staff and students can attend for $5.
