New Ensemble The Dukes Music Debuts at Chapel Concert

A new Mary Pappert School of Music ensemble dedicated to performing baroque music on instruments of the 17^th and 18^th centuries will make its debut at a concert this weekend in the University Chapel of the Holy Spirit.

The Dukes Music will play its first concert on Saturday, Sept. 30, at 7:30 p.m. The free performance will feature Visiting Assistant Professor of Music Theory Dr. Paul Miller on baroque violin with special guests Justin Wallace on harpsichord and Patricia Halverson on viola da gamba.

“The ensemble performs only on historical instruments—that is to say, instruments as they would have been known at the time the music was written,” said Miller. “The concert will feature music that the Marquis Duquesne might have heard growing up in Toulon or during his visits to the military command in Paris.”

The performance will include works by Dario Castello; Biagio Marini; Arcangelo Corelli; Jean-Joseph de Mondonville; Élisabeth Jacquet de La Guerre; and Jean-Marie Leclair.

The Dukes Music next performance, which will focus on baroque music of imperial Vienna around 1700, is slated for Friday, Feb. 16, in the Dr. Thomas D. Pappert Center for Performance and Innovation in the School of Music.
