Film Series to Explore ‘Human Rights in the Age of Trump’
Human Rights in the Age of Trump, the 11th annual Human Rights Film Series at Duquesne University, will present award-winning films that focus on issues that have profound human rights concerns, including the global refugee crisis; the portrayal of Muslims as terrorists in U.S. news and entertainment; and efforts made to battle climate change.
Presented by the Department of Modern Languages and Literatures, this year’s four-film series kicks off Wednesday, Jan. 17, with a screening of 13th, a documentary that explores the history of racial inequality in America, with a focus on the United States Constitution’s 13th Amendment.
Immediately following the film, Jeff Mallory, director of the University’s Office of Diversity and Inclusion, will provide personal insight on the issue and answer questions from attendees.
Additional films being screened during the Human Rights Film Series include:
- Wednesday, Jan. 24: An Inconvenient Sequel: Truth to Power, former Vice President Al Gore’s powerful follow-up to An Inconvenient Truth.
- Wednesday, Jan. 31: Constructing the Terrorist Threat, a look at how Muslims have become the predominant face of terror in U.S. news and entertainment media.
- Wednesday, Feb. 7: Human Flow, a detailed exploration into the global refugee crisis.
