Lecture to Center on Relationship Between Religious Healing and Psychotherapy

An upcoming presentation will address cultural modulations of faith and reason among believing Catholic psychiatrists and mental health professionals who consult with and assist exorcists.

Worlds of Being flyerCatholic Psychiatrists and the Practice of Exorcism: Differential Diagnosis or Act of Faith? will take place on Friday, Sept. 28, from 12:30 to 1:45 p.m. in the Gumberg Library’s Phenomenology Center.

Dr. Thomas J. Csordas, distinguished professor in the Department of Anthropology at the University of California, San Diego, will present on the phenomenology of bodily experience in the rite of exorcism. He also will address whether religious healing and psychotherapy are considered similar forms of addressing afflictions.

Worlds of Being is an ongoing workshop series hosted by the Department of Psychology that aims to bring philosophical theories to bear on contemporary dilemmas of lived experience, with a special emphasis on the issues of suffering and healing in a culturally diverse world.
