Matt Frist Among ‘Pittsburgh Business Times’ CFO of the Year Awardees

Vice President for Finance and Business Matt Frist has been named one of the 2018 CFO of the Year Awardees by the Pittsburgh Business Times.

The CFO of the Year awards recognize financial professionals in western Pennsylvania for their outstanding performance as financial stewards.

“I was both surprised and honored when I discovered that my team had nominated me for this recognition and that the Pittsburgh Business Times selected me as a CFO of the Year recipient,” said Frist. “It’s the persistent efforts of my staff on behalf of Duquesne University and our students that makes this acknowledgement even possible.”

Frist, who has been in his role as vice president since February 2016, leads the Division of Finance and Business, the members of which work with students, faculty and staff as well as prospective employees, vendors, outside auditors and regulatory agencies. He also assists in staffing the audit and finance and investment committees for the University’s board of directors.

During Frist’s term as vice president, the University has been ranked by U.S. News and World Report among the top 25 national universities that operate the most efficiently. In addition, Duquesne’s net assets have grown by approximately 19 percent and investments have grown by approximately 32 percent. Frist also played a key role in the recently announced strategic partnership between the University, Radnor Property Group and Harrison Street Real Estate Capital regarding Brottier Hall.

Frist joined Duquesne University in 1998 as a budget analyst and has served in various roles regarding financial planning, budgeting and analytics. He also has been a member of numerous committees that address benefits, bond compliance, budget and retirement issues.

In addition to his work at Duquesne, Frist is a financial peer reviewer for the Middle States Commission on Higher Education and has held leadership roles with the Eastern Association of College and University Business Officers.

Frist earned a bachelor’s degree from Gannon University, a master’s degree from Duquesne and an Ed.D. in higher education management from the University of Pittsburgh. He also completed the Management Development Program at the Harvard Institutes for Higher Education.

The Pittsburgh Business Times will acknowledge Frist and the other honorees at a dinner and awards ceremony on Wednesday, Nov. 7, at the Omni William Penn Hotel downtown. The paper also will include a special supplement in next week’s edition that outlines this year’s winners.
