Stream Field Biology Students to Present on Community Projects

Duquesne field biology students working in streams will share their findings on various community water projects during a poster session next week.

The annual Stream Field Biology Poster Session will take place from noon-8:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Dec. 4, on the second floor of Mellon Hall. The 15 students will be available to talk about their projects from 6-8:30 p.m.

Student projects include water chemistry studies on Pine Creek and Girty’s Run, fish surveys on Nine Mile Run, Montour Run, Pine Creek and Little Sewickley Creek, and macroinvertebrate surveys on Raccoon Creek and the Ohio River. Students also conducted stream litter cleanup projects in Nine Mile Run and created lesson plans on stream ecology, which they presented to a second grade science class in Ohio.

“The poster session is an opportunity to relate what the student did to stream biology and reflect on its impact on our community partners and aquatic environments,” said Dr. Brady Porter, associate professor of biological sciences and director of undergraduate studies for the Bayer School of Natural and Environmental Sciences. “We’ve included the poster session to showcase the variety of student experiences and share these data with our community partners.”
