CIQR Event, Book Launch to Focus on Political Aesthetics of Urban Public Art

Dr. Fred Evans, professor of philosophy and coordinator for the Center for Interpretive and Qualitative Research (CIQR), will present an upcoming lecture based on his new book Public Art and the Fragility of Democracy: An Essay in Political Aesthetics, published by Columbia University Press.

Public Art and the Fragility of Democracy: An Essay in Political Aesthetics Evans’ lecture, Political Aesthetics of Public Art in Urban Spaces, will be held Thursday, Feb. 28, from 4:30-6 p.m. in the Gumberg Library’s Simon Silverman Phenomenology Center.

In his talk, Evans will propose a criterion for assessing public artworks as “acts of citizenship” in democratic cities and discuss pertinent examples. The event will serve as both a book launch and a celebration of CIQR’s 20th anniversary.

Free and open to the public, the event is sponsored by the McAnulty College and Graduate School of Liberal Arts, CIQR, Columbia University Press and the Department of Philosophy.
